Temporal, as in time, this lobe helps us place ourselves in the universe.

  • Memory > short term, long term, all the memories

  • Speaking, as in language learning > Not only do you understand English, but can you hold a conversation

  • Hearing/Auditory skills > can you hear the difference in pitch, can you hear a word and then recognize what that word actually means

  • Some behavior control > no, really, don’t do stupid stuff

Have you ever said, “I know you’re talking, but I have no idea what you said,” welcome to your temporal lobe fritzing out.  When the temporal lobe goes, say goodbye to memory recall, language processing, listening to anything, and a bit of behavior control.

How do we brain train the temporal lobe?

Training the temporal lobe is also a games lobe. Memory games. Sound games. Word games. Ball = squat. So when we say ball, you would do squats. Or we’ll flash a card with a ball, a bat, and a bee, and you’d have to remember that ball = squats, bat = lunges, and bee = jumping jacks, and then do them in that order. Some of the auditory exercises can help hear through the “noise” of life, so you can make out what sounds are important to your life, and whether that “ting” in the bridge is actually loud enough to make a difference or if your engineer has more work to do.
